This product is ASTM A513/A513M Grade 4130 chromium–molybdenum (Chromoly) mechanical tubing manufactured by the ERW → Drawn-Over-Mandrel (DOM) → cold drawing route. ASTM A513 Type 5 DOM tubing is produced from electric-resistance-welded tube that is subsequently cold drawn over a mandrel to achieve high dimensional accuracy, improved concentricity, and a smooth bore (often described as “near-seamless” in finish, though it is not made from a solid billet).
Product form: Round / square / rectangular / special-shaped mechanical tubing (DOM)
Typical OD range: 6–219 mm (custom sizes available)
Typical wall thickness: 0.5–20.0 mm (custom thickness available)
Length: Random length or cut-to-length (as agreed)
Delivery conditions (common options): As-welded, normalized, DOM, DOM stress relieved
Surface: Black / oiled / bright (pickled & oiled), optional coatings on request
Precision OD/ID and improved concentricity after DOM cold drawing (excellent for machining and tight-fit assemblies)
Smooth internal surface & reduced wall variation, supporting stable performance in mechanical motion and load-bearing parts
4130 Chromoly strength-to-weight advantage, enabling lighter designs vs. plain carbon steels in many structural parts
Heat-treatable (normalized or quenched & tempered) to match required strength/toughness targets
Q1: “Is DOM really comparable to seamless for my application?”
A: DOM made to ASTM A513 is widely specified because its wall uniformity and concentricity are excellent, and its properties are often described as comparable to cold-drawn seamless of similar chemistry/size. For strict “true seamless” requirements, we can offer a seamless option by request (e.g., ASTM A519).
Q2: “Will I spend less time machining?”
A: DOM tubing is commonly chosen because its surface finish, straight bore, and minimized wall variation can reduce stock removal, shorten machining time, and improve yield on precision parts.
Q3: “Can you guarantee chemistry & traceability?”
A: We supply with heat/lot traceability and material test documentation aligned to the specified grade/standard. For critical projects, PMI/third-party inspection can be arranged.
Q4: “Is 4130 weldable, and how do we avoid cracking?”
A: 4130 is generally weldable, but process control matters. For demanding weldments, pre/post-weld heat treatment is commonly recommended to reduce cold-cracking risk and preserve toughness.
Q5: “What about corrosion—will it rust?”
A: 4130 is a low-alloy steel and typically needs surface protection in humid/chloride environments (oil, phosphate, paint, zinc, epoxy, etc.). For aggressive corrosion conditions, consider upgrading the protection system or switching to a corrosion-resistant alloy.
